The turtles are back home from their space war with Krang,
but they aren’t going to be relaxing anytime soon.
The issue is for the most part a filler issue, so if you
haven’t been reading the series so far (shame on you if you haven’t) then this
would be the perfect jumping on point before we get knee deep in some serious shit with the Foot Clan in the upcoming ‘City Fall’ arc.
Kevin Eastman once again returns to art duties after the unfortunately lackluster annual. I was always a fan of Kevin's art more than Peter Laird's in the original Mirage series, so anytime the man wants to put out some turtle work is fine by
me. It really is great to see the turtles in classic art style once again,
however I am more than ready to see Mateus Santolouco return for his full time
ongoing duties.
In this issue the turtles are in for quite a shock when a stranger from nowhere appears and just hands them their collective asses, taunting them the whole time while doing so and giving the
TMNT a hard lesson that they may not be a good as they think they are. This stranger
changes martial arts styles fluidly and shows us and the turtles just how
unprepared they really are. It’s a good story and it’s something that needed to be done
to ground the turtles back to reality to remind them they are at war and it’s
time to start preparing.
The twist ending can be seen coming from a mile away, but I suppose
it wasn’t meant to be some big reveal either, which is fine, however it just feels a little too predictable.
That being said, there really isn’t much to complain about
with the issue or this series even. It is consistently one of the best comics
out there and sadly does not get the recognition it deserves. So if you haven’t
been reading, do yourself a favor a go pick up this issue as a starting point,
the next issue kicks off a massive story arc that will be game changer.
